CALIFORNIA ACCUSES SKYBLOCK MONEY FOUNDATION OF UNLICENSED MONEY TRANSMISSION

 

 

 

An article on Forbes.com by Bitcoin Foundation Board Member and Secretary Jon Matonis announced today that the Bitcoin Foundation had been the recipient of of a “cease and desist” letter from the State of California’s Department of Financial Instututions(DFI). The letter alleges that the “BitCoin Foundation” is operating as a money transmitting business without “proper authorization.” It proceeds to threaten “APPROPRIATE ACTION” if the Foundation fails to “CEASE AND DESIST FROM CONDUCTING THE BUSINESS OF MONEY TRANSMISSION” in the State of California, and requires a response in writing within 20 days. It isn’t clear as to whether the countdown started from the 30 May date, or from the letter was received(the letterhead shows “CERTIFIED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED.”

 

While the letter provides no explanation for how the Foundation can be considered a money transmitter, simply stating that the matter has “come to the attention of the Commissioner” of the DFI, one possible link is the Bitcoin 2013 convention, organized by the Foundation in San Jose, California on 17-19 May. The letter, dated 30 May, also coincides eerily with a similar notice from the State of Virginia that led Virginia-based Tangible Cryptography to suspend its operation of FastCash4Bitcoins.com.

 

The California letter, signed by Paul T. Crayton, Senior Counsel, goes on to list several potential punitive outcomes that could result by non-compliance, including fines and prison time. Curiously, the relevant US Code sections attached to the letter for “convenient reference” appear to have been sloppily printed off from Cornell University’s legal reference website, complete with sidebar ads asking “Don’t have a CFO?” and another from Google proclaiming “Websites are now free for California business,” indicating that Google’s location specific advertisement targeting is working just fine. The message is that the feminist movement has moved from a movement aimed at equality to one aimed at giving women the upper hand in society. Young thinks that’s a bad thing. Whether you agree with that or not, it has some relevance to poker, where women are often seen moaning about a lack of equality in poker rather than using the situation to gain an advantage.

Women poker players can usually profit by adjusting their game to exploit the foibles of male opponents. Different kinds of men call for different approaches, sometimes the differences between male stereotypes can be subtle. Two different kinds of men are those that I call chauvinists and those I call macho.

Chauvinists

Chauvinistic men who tend to think all women are weak, predictable, tight players and that women have good judgment. He’ll tend to try to be tricky when playing against women and he’ll tend to ignore any information he might be able to get from observation of a woman.

Macho men can’t stand to let a woman win or take control of the betting. This kind of man can’t stand to lose, and especially can’t stand to lose to a woman. He’ll tend to develop an acute case of FPS trying to outplay an aggressive woman. He’s usually doomed.

Playing chauvinistic men.

How to Execute a Controlled UFAShot

If you’re a right-handed shooter, throwing from stick-left, you will stand parallel to the table with the arm rail across your front mid-section. The forearm of your non-throwing arm will be flat along the chip rail for support. You will lean out over the table slightly so you can reach down with your throwing hand to set and pick up the dice. Your body will be facing the boxman.

If you are right-handed and throwing from stick-right, you will stand with your right side up against the arm rail, perpendicular to the table. You will directly face the stickman and your target area at the far wall. Your non-throwing left arm will probably be down by your side and out of the way. One thing that you may have noticed if you tried throwing right-handed from stick-right is that you are throwing over a greater distance. This is true because you are throwing across the front of your body plus the stickman’s body. You will discover that you are using some upper arm motion (pivoting about the shoulder) in order to deliver the dice.

With the right-handed shooter at stick-left, his right arm is already closest to the stickman (and the target area) and he is only throwing across the stickman’s body as he extends his arm towards the back wall. His forearm is pivoting about the elbow so he has a little less arm motion and a little less distance to cover. The right-handed, stick-left may be slightly preferred for these reasons, but both positions are excellent.

One caveat here for the stick-right or stick-left position—be careful not to throw the UFA dice at an obtuse angle to the back wall. Your two-dimensional trajectory should be perpendicular to the far wall. In addition, your dice should bounce off the flat portion, not the corners of the back wall. It’s unfortunate, but the subtleties of Omaha seem to completely escape him. I think the only time he ever won at it was when his table shared a jackpot that two other players hit. I once played at his table, and felt so sorry for him that I only check-raised him 12 times and tried not to peek at his cards, except when I absolutely had to.

Mason Malmuth has been one of the most prolific poker writers over the last twenty years. Every few years, he collects the best articles he has written, revises them, and publishes them as the next installment in his Poker Essays series. Poker Essays Volume III represents what Malmuth thinks were his best essays to have appeared in the magazines Poker Digest and Card Player as well as on the Two Plus Two web site over the last five years.

The articles are divided into seven sections, more to break up the book I think than because the categories are all that important. The sections include General Concepts, Technical Ideas, Strategic Ideas, In the Cardrooms, Hands to Talk About, The Ciaffone Quiz, and Two More Quizzes. If these categories seem familiar, it’s because five of them have appeared in all three volumes of the author’s Poker Essays series.

As one would expect from Malmuth, most of these essays are quite good, although they tend to not be as fundamental as the authors work in Gambling Theory and Other Topics or even the earlier Poker Essays books. This shouldn’t be too surprising, as the author has laid the groundwork for his ideas on poker in his previous works. The articles in Poker Essays Volume III are predominantly focusing on refining ideas Malmuth (sometimes with David Sklansky) has presented in earlier books, or they compare or evaluate key concepts or situations.

Because of this, the reader would probably be best served by reading a great deal of the Two Plus Two catalog before attacking this book. I would suggest that reading and studying Hold’em Poker for Advanced Players, Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players, Sklansky’s Theory of Poker, and Gambling Theory and Other Topics before working on Malmuth’s latest. However, this isn’t strictly necessary. Also, while it would make some sense to read the first two volumes in the Poker Essays series first, this isn’t critical for understanding his latest book.
